PULSATILLA NIGRANS

Matéria Médica

Understanding Pulsatilla nig.

Dr. Claudio C. Araujo M.D. FFHom. (Lon.) et al.

Due to its own nature, Pulsatilla is a difficult remedy to understand. A simple remedy in the beginning, but as far as we advance in its understanding, as far its complexity shows itself to the reader. But, assuming its controversial aspects, we can start from Kent´s observations that he himself has noticed: Pulsailla´s complex nature:

Kent: She is tearful, plethoric, and generally has little credit for being sick from her appearances; yet she is most nervous, fidgety, changeable, easily led and easily persuaded. While she is mild, gentle and tearful, yet she is remarkably irritable, not in the sense of pugnacity, but easily irritated, extremely touchy, always feels slighted or fears she will be slighted; sensible to every social influence.

And we have, from the proving:

Gloomy, melancholy, full of care.

Hypochondriac moroseness; out of sorts with everything.

Gloomy, melancholic mood.

Restless and changeable; easily moved to tears or laughter; well one hour, miserable the next.

Satisfied with nothing, yet not vexed, [1]

Extremely capricious and peevish at everything, even at himself.

Extremely capricious and peevish about everything, himself included.

Very discontented, weeps a long time, in the morning, after waking.

She cried a good deal, and was very low-spirited (naturally she is quite the contrary),

A gloomy, melancholy mood set in..

Pulsatilla is a complex and contradictory patient, even in one physical symptoms and modalities.

Trying to figure out the real world where Pulsatilla lives, the proving brought us a very hard place where she´s living:

Dreams: confused, frightful; anxious, vivid; of fright and disgust; sad, with weeping; anxious, when lying on left side; of black beasts; that he is falling.

When evening comes he begins to dread ghosts, four evenings in succession; during the day anxiety and flushing heat over the whole body, though the hands and face are cold and pale.

Screams and starts up in sleep, frightened by a black dog, a cat; tries to drive away bees.

Woke frequently on account of vivid dreams; for example, that he was falling, [1].

At night he woke as if frightened and dazed; did not know where he was, and was not quite conscious (after five, and twelve hours), [1].

Pulsatilla mental state is the one as we may expect from her experience with “her own “word”. We may see, as we move further on into Pulssatilla complexity, now we are face her inner state:

Gloomy, melancholy, full of care.

Hypochondriac moroseness; out of sorts with everything.

Gloomy, melancholic mood.

Restless and changeable; easily moved to tears or laughter; well one hour, miserable the next.

Satisfied with nothing, yet not vexed, [1]

Extremely capricious and peevish at everything, even at himself, [1]

Extremely capricious and peevish about everything, himself included.

Very discontented, weeps a long time, in the morning, after waking.

She cried a good deal, and was very low-spirited (naturally she is quite the contrary),

A gloomy, melancholy mood set in..

But, as we went into her deepest symptoms, another “level” of feelings and impressions came out from the proving. Puslsatilla feels oneself alone in the world, forsake and very confused.

It seems so quiet in her head and everything feels so empty that she seems alone in the house and in the world; she will speak to no one, just as if her surroundings did not exist, and she paid attention to no one,.

She is confused, alone, full of contradictory issues and them comes another aspect of her personality. As contradictory as she is, Pulsartilla´s sexuality is represented in the proving by opposite feelings. From one side, she fantasies that there´s this man in her bed.

Dread of men; she fancies a naked man is wrapped in her bedclothes and rolled up under her bed, while she has only a sheet to cover her; all her dreams are about men.

This dread of men is also associated to a religious aversion to the opposite sex.

Unquiet look; lips bluish red; weak memory; pangs of conscience about religion and the female sex; violent palpitation in the presence of women; abhors and hates the sex; must go out of their way for fear of injuring them; looks upon them as evil beings and is afraid; considers their presence injurious to his soul; respiration short and difficult; painful pressure in chest.

Sleepless at 2 A. M.; pulsating, beating headache proceeding from vertex; lamentations; despaired of her soul's salvation; did not believe she would be restored to health; irresolute disposition; taciturn. θ Melancholy.

Now, on reading the next symptoms from the proving, our patient is suffering from the impression that men and women represents damnation to one´s soul, so our Pulsatilla patient may abhors the opposite sex, fearing he might have his soul cursed by his sexual attraction towards them.

But, as we are dealing with a very contradictory human being, also present in the proving is Pulsatilla sexual disorder now moving towards the other extreme:

Sexual desire too strong; almost priapism.

Long-lasting morning erections.

Nightly emissions: two in one night, with amorous dreams; with mental depression; eyes felt as if they would push back into orbit, head light and empty, as if it were off shoulders; after onanism.

Sexual excesses resulting in headache; backache; limbs heavy.

Erections day and night,.

Frequent erections, with discharge of prostatic fluid

Erections, in the morning, for a long time after waking, not without sexual desire (after six hours),

Sexual excitement and desire for coition, in the morning, on waking

Seminal emission, with amorous dream (third night); without dream]

Nightly emissions.

Nymphomania.

Two emissions in one night, with dreams that were not amorous, and on the next day lassitude and intolerable heaviness of the limbs

Lascivious dreams in the evening and morning, almost without sexual excitement

Amorous dream, with seminal emission.

Afraid of what is coming towards her, feeling alone and forsake, fighting inside oneself with one´s out of control sexual thoughts and whims and - expressing many contradictory decisions and longings – this is our patient.

We might add at this point her irritability, her inconstancy in every decision that has been taken before and her insecurity - towards her survival in this world: not present in the proving but present in our repertories. Pulsatilla strategy for survival includes: her charming, coquettish way of being, and also she is vain and seducible - all this hiding someone who is afraid of poverty, longing for a wealthy husband – and then becoming subservient to him as long he provides her with protection and company, and all the wordily things she needs so much to feel herself sefe and cared.

Other symptoms from the proving may stress what we had said before about this patient´s personality:

Gloomy, melancholy, full of care.

Hypochondriac moroseness; out of sorts with everything.

Gloomy, melancholic mood.

Restless and changeable; easily moved to tears or laughter; well one hour, miserable the next.

Satisfied with nothing, yet not vexed,.

Extremely capricious and peevish at everything, even at himself,.

Extremely capricious and peevish about everything, himself included.

Very discontented, weeps a long time, in the morning, after waking.

She cried a good deal, and was very low-spirited (naturally she is quite the contrary),

We may find our Pulsatilla patient also is a sad and depressive condition. But, different from other remedies, Pulsatilla may express her sadness since the first moments of the consultation. She easily weeps as soon she starts to complain:

Weeping: sad, bursting into tears very easily; can hardly tell her symptoms for weeping; at every nursing; at everything, whether joyful or sad; at answering a question; with almost all her sufferings.

The pain is so violent that she tosses in every direction, with cries and tears.

He sinks into a condition of sadness and despondency from disagreeable news (after twenty hours)

As we have said, Pulsatilla is overtaken by her fears, but they are not a given fear for something. In fact, it is a general fear towards the future, as is present in this symptom:

Tearful, easily discouraged; full of anxiety, forebodings of impending disaster; anxiety from epigastrium, likely to be associated with indigestion; chattering teeth; palpitation; flushes.

Tremulous anguish: as if death were near; < during rest, while sitting and lying; > by motion.

Anxiety; does not know what to do (before an hour), [1]

Anxiety, as if he would have apoplexy, in the evening, after lying down, with chilliness, sounds in the ears like music, with twitching in the fingers of the right hand.

Tremulous anxiety, as if death were imminent

Anxiety in the afternoon, with trembling of the hands, that are spotted red, but not hot,

Anxiety, as if he were in a hot atmosphere,.

Anxious solicitude about his health

To finish our study, a symptom from the proving that may define the personality of our patient, or we may say, the consequences of her troubled mind over herself and her daily life.

Extreme irresolution.

And its consequences:

Continuous crying with great melancholy and fear of losing her reason, or that she might commit suicide.

Weary of life; thinks with pleasure of drowning.

Anxiety: thinks to die; does not know what to do; as if in a hot atmosphere; in region of heart; even to suicide; in evening, with sensation of qualmishness in pit of stomach; in evening after going to sleep, with a rush of ideas and determination of blood to head that forces him to get up; at night, as from heat.

Anguish in region of heart, sometimes increasing to a desire for suicide.

Anxiety in the region of the heart, even to suicide, in the evening, associated with a sensation of qualmishness in the pit of the stomach.

Anxiety, thinks to die (after one hour).

After mortification, sad, gloomy and weary of life; frequent pain in forehead, earthy face; dark rings around eyes; bitter, sapid taste in mouth; dislikes meat and bread; nausea, with pain in stomach; occasional bitter, slimy vomiting; frequent, profuse nosebleed; stitches in side, when coughing, with frothy, bloody expectoration; palpitation; labored breathing; hard, scanty stools; frequent cutting pain in bowels; heaviness of legs; limbs feel bruised; swelling on upper part of foot; anxious dreams; is anxious, sad; weary of life, thinks of drowning with great pleasure; bursts into tears; dissatisfied with everything; easily enraged; reticent; very easily frightened.
