What is Nux-v. first impression of reality?

Nux vomica was born oversensitive. As if he had no defense against any of the reality stimulus that are coming towards him. Touch, light, sound or even the sensation of the air touching his skin, everything is painfully sensitive. She will cry at her mother’s caresses; she will start to weep at any new painful sensation arriving through her senses. A patient, describing his little son, said: “it seems that any noise is painful to him!”

Everything makes too strong an impression upon him, [1]. 

Oversensitive to impressions upon the senses; he cannot tolerate strong odors or bright light,  

He cannot tolerate a noise or talking; music and singing affect him, [1].

She cannot endure the slightest ailment, [1].

Increased sensibility, [21].

Pains not endured without loud cries and complaints, mingled with reproaches, and quarrelling, [1]. 

Over sensitiveness: to external impressions, odors, light, noise or music, a slight current of air; to trifling ailments; every harmless word offends, even suitable medicine aggravates.

Extremely tender, gentle mood; music affects him to tears, [1]. 

Nux-v. will grow up into a life of over sensitiveness and its most common follower, a strong irritability. Everything affects him; and he will become a very peevish and irritable person: quarrelsome, fault finding and violent.

Suits very particular, careful, zealous persons, inclined to get angry or excited, or of a spiteful, malicious disposition. 

Very easily bewildered; everything goes wrong. 

Irritable, morose, sullen; quarrelsome if disturbed. 

Cannot bear reading of conversation; irritable and wishes to be alone. 

Fiery, excited temperament; violent; sensational. 

Scornful, peevish, inclined to be angry (after one hour), [1]. 

She is very much inclined to quarrelsome vexation, [1].

Everything miscarries with him; it seems to go contrary (after six hours), [1].

We can assume that - someone so sensitive to every stimulus that is going through in this planet - will very soon become a very irritated and deeply reactive person to any sort of trouble. He will become painfully intolerant to social injustices – what we may name nowadays someone with a strong social conscience: injustices committed by the dictatorial governments, tortures, genocides, killing, famine, and so on. We are all aware, through all the daily news brought to us by the media vehicles, of all the injustices and sufferings people are subject around the world. These facts, and the news relating to these facts, will all affect us in a very deep form. We can imagine, as a Nux-v. patient, the affliction and sufferings those information maay bring.

Clear consciousness of his existence; fine, strong, correct feeling of right and wrong, 

Very much inclined to violently reproach others for their faults, [1]. 

Kent: They are never contented, never satisfied; disturbed by their surroundings, and they become irritable, so that they want to tear things, to scold. 

Anxiety: an anxious solicitude, as though something serious were dreaded, in the morning and afternoon (during the fifth hour), [1].

Nux-v. must find out a way to survive. Life is giving him a hard time. Even the heat of the summer is painful to him. The environment is painful, his work is painful, to get together to his friends and relatives is painful, exertion (sports?) is also painful.

We can imagine our expectations for the summer time: our holidays, our good times, to have fun, to have some rest from our work, our school. To be with our friends, to relax and to rest.

But not for Nux-v.

Heat of Summer insupportable; slightest exercise produces fatigue, with sleepiness and gastric ailments. 

He has no patience for work, [2]. 

No desire for work, [1].

Indolent at every undertaking in business; she soon becomes weary, [1]. 

He is hasty; looked angrily at any one who asked him a question without answering, as though he was obliged to restrain himself to avoid being insulting; he was in such an irritable and unrestrained mood that it seemed as though he would like to strike any one in the face who spoke a work to him, [1]. 

Inclined to find fault and scold; morose; stubborn; an insane desire when alone with her husband, whom she adores, to kill him. 

Where he will find some rest for his over sensitiveness?

Kent: Patient is broken down sexually because he is unusually endowed with sexual desires and he indulges until broken down; sexually exhausted, impotent.

On slight irritation, or only the slight touch of a woman, sexual orgasm, especially in the morning in bed (after eight hours), [1]. 

Sexual desire on slightest provocation. 

Great excitement of sexual organs, with sexual dreams and orgasm, in irritable and headstrong women. 

Burning in vulva, with desire for an embrace. θ Nymphomania.

Nux-v. find out that apart from his painfully relationship with most aspects of reality, his sexual sensitivity is capable of give him delightful pleasures. If most of the outside inputs will cause him pain, he soon discovered early in his/her life that he could get some compensation of his sufferings through sexual pleasure.

Irritation and inflammation of ovaries occasioned by rich living, highly seasoned food, stimulating drinks, or by a too sedentary life.

Intoxication or drunkenness of previous day, with vanishing of sight and hearing, < after dinner and in sun; heaviness of head in morning.

Syncope: in morning, at night, or soon after dinner; in open air; congestion to head and chest; in pregnancy; in persons worn out by mental labor or addicted to excessive use of spirits; nausea, pale face, scintillations before eyes, or obscurations of sight, pains in stomach, anguish, trembling.

Stupefaction, confusion as from nightly reveling; dullness of head.

Vertigo: < from tea or coffee, after stooping or when looking up, she must clutch something to keep from falling ; from abdominal complaints, with digestive disturbances, flatulency, constipation, portal stasis; in haemorrhoidal subjects ; after suppressed hemorrhoidal flow; with inability to think; with obscuration of vision and staggering ; while eating and immediately after eating ; from sedentary habits, alcoholic drinks, smoking, coffee, opium, smell of flowers, gas, etheric oils, etc.; with nausea ; after typhoid; from night watching and mental overexertion. 

Associated with his strong sexual appeal, Nux-v. will also find out that his sensitiveness is also directed towards good food and good drinking. Those pleasures related to the table for him are all strongly enhanced due to his over sensitiveness. If living is painful from one side, is extremely pleasured from this other side.

Now we can have a general idea of Nux-v.: His original over sensitiveness is leading him towards a strong irritability against everyone and everything that could bring him pain. Combined to an increased general sensual over sensitiveness, this time giving him a special drive towards sex, eating and drinking.

We can imagine someone carrying these features: quarrelsome, impatient, going fat, brought to tears at every sentimental experience, inflamed, loquacious and out of sorts when the subject is politics, worried about the suffering of the poor, about famine, about injustice.

But we must not leave aside his symptoms of lack of confidence. Altogether with his strong sensitiveness, Nux-v. don’t trust his intellectual capabilities.

Great anxiety of mind without particular cause; thinks she will not be able to get along in life; caducity; chilliness; sleeplessness; stool infrequent, hard, although appetite is good; frequent and quick urination, at times involuntary. 

Anxious solicitude and irresolution, [1].

Irresolution; constant fickleness in his plans, [1]. 

Dawdles and is irresolute, [1]. 

She wishes to accomplish much, but thinks it will not succeed, [1]. 

Despondent and fretful, [1]. 

When he became insecure? Why he didn’t fight for a greater cause, for what he believes, for his work, but instead he fills himself with food, alcohol and sex?

Melancholia after extraction of carious tooth; speaks of nothing but his tooth; retires to his room and unlocks door only after much entreaty; on entrance of physician withdraws timidly to farthest corner of room, with his eyes cast down; of many questions answers but few and speaks of nothing but his tooth; intolerance to slightest noise and great aversion to labor; sits idly about whole day, crying, and complaining of his anxiety. 

 Dream that all the teeth fell from the mouth, [1]. 

Dreams that teeth are falling out, [41].

Gets frightened easily and is almost beside herself from least thing that may happen; shuns the fresh air. θ Menorrhagia.

She was in great alarm, kept fast hold on her husband and refused to let him go, [43]. 

Easily startled, [21]. 

Apprehension, oppression, and a feeling of intoxication, in the evening, while walking, [1].

Three months ago mental shock, since then fears to be alone, (…)

Hypochondriasis: with studious men sitting too much at home, with abdominal complaints and costiveness (constipation)

Very hypochondriac, and affected by the slightest thing, after eating, [1]. 

Dreads death, [1]. 

She believes that she is near death, [1]. 

Lies awake in bed in a stupid state, sometimes with a friendly expression, sometimes staring right before him; cannot speak a word, yawns, groans and sighs occasionally; often puts hand to forehead and frowns. θ Effects of wounded honor.

Melancholic in consequence of losing his position, morose, capricious, irritable, hasty; the least contradiction puts him out entirely; remains for hours without wishing to take part in conversation. 

From disappointed ambition, bewildered, talks incoherently; does everything he attempts to do wrong; heaviness of head, pain in stomach and small of back; feels weak, cannot sit up; face now pale, with sharp, pointed nose, then red, with irritated pulse. Is sullen and obstinate; would not eat nor speak; eyes large, congested; urine high colored, with mealy sediment. θ Mania.

We continue: His teeth were taken away from him and he is now helpless, impotent, with no power to fight back, to survive.

He is afraid of dying, afraid of being alone. If he loses his job he will be sad, depressed, as he has no courage to fight back for his life. His teeth were taken.

Anxiety with irritability and inclination to commit suicide, but is afraid to die. 

Even in his worst moment he is afraid of choosing, afraid of take a decision. Afraid of death.

Everything was taken away from him. He has no power to survive. This clinical case from Hering’s is a resume of Nux-v.:

For hours together sits still and absorbed (generally in forenoon), betraying great moral and physical languor, looking before him with disturbed mien (semblante), and dull, sunken eyes, as if he felt no interest in anything, and answering questions, if at all, incoherently; sometimes falling into a restless slumber for ten or fifteen minutes, out of which he returns to full consciousness with difficulty and gradually; in afternoon and especially in evening is much excited, becomes talkative and even chatty, but jumps from subject to subject; eyes then have a peculiar brilliancy, face wears an expression of deep earnest; launches into high-flying, fantastic plans, fancies himself rich and wants to make presents of thousands, and makes large useless purchases; does not consider himself ill; has not slept for nearly a fortnight, brooding all night long over a lawsuit, by which he may gain or lose a million; head hot, skin dry, complexion yellowish, pupils contracted, tongue coated, pulse hard and small, slightly accelerated; constipation; replies reluctantly and slowly to physician's questions, and takes it in bad part if not allowed to read indictment for said lawsuit, a confused, irrational piece of work, on which he has been working all night. θ Insanity. 

Nux-v. assumes that she can survive without her heart. A heart means courage, bravery, our power to fight for what is right, to love our dearest, to love humanity. She believes that a new heart is forming back again inside oneself, and we believe that that’s what we all should hope during the treatment of a Nux-v. case.

Mania puerperalis from excitement, sleeplessness and prostration; had menorrhagia, and for the subsequent weakness drank much whisky and strong coffee; cachectic appearance; large, dim, languid eyes; lies in bed half uncovered, sits up and then lies down again; constantly complaining, criticizing or explaining, at times words are well chosen, at others uses high-sounding phrases; as soon as she recognized physician she spoke of the imperfection of medical knowledge and declared it an error that one could not live without a heart, inasmuch as she felt very well without one, it having come away with the afterbirth to which it had grown fast, the nurse having separated the two before her eyes; complains of her husband, says he wishes to convince her she is sick, although she is able to dance and sing; makes grotesque motions and wild leaps, but soon sinks down breathless; nymphomania; often enraged; frequently sips at a bowl of warm sugar-water, declaring it will form her a new heart; (…)

Kent: The mental state is varied, but they all show over sensitiveness: irritable, touchy, sensitive conditions.

They are never contented, never satisfied; disturbed by their surroundings, and they become irritable, so that they want to tear things, to scold. 

Impulses are strongly marked at times. The woman has impulses to destroy her husband or to throw her child into the fire; the impulse is intermingled with violent temper, cannot be contradicted or opposed; if a chair is in the way he kicks it over; if, while undressing, a part of his clothing should catch on a button he would pull it off because he is so mad at it. (Like Nit. ac.).

An uncontrollable state of irritability; it is a weakness and is accompanied by physical weakness; a lack of balance. For example, a business man has been at his desk until he is tired out, he receives many letters, he has a great many irons in the fire; he is troubled with a thousand little things; his mind is constantly hurried from one thing to another until he is tortured. It is not so much the heavy affairs but the little things. He is compelled to stimulate his memory to attend to all the details; he goes home and thinks about it; he lies awake, at night; his mind is confused with the whirl of business and the affairs of the day crowd upon him; finally brain fag comes on.

When the details come to him he gets angry and wants to get away, tears things up, scolds, goes home and takes it out of his family and children. Sleeps by fits and starts; wakens at 3 A.M., and his business affairs crowd on him so that he cannot sleep again until late in the morning when he falls into a fatiguing sleep and wakens up tired and exhausted. 

He wants to sleep late in the morning.

Melancholy, sadness, but all the time he feels as if he could fly to pieces, jerks things about, tears things up; wants to force things his own way.

Driven by impulses to commit acts that verge upon insanity - the destruction of others. Natr. sul. has a strong impulse to destroy himself. Arg. nitr., also, particularly by jumping from a height, but he avoids placing himself in such a position.

Oversensitive to stimulants. It is a routine remedy in men trying to sober up; even in delirium tremens. 

Old debauchees, broken down with stimulants, sexual excesses and the worry and fret of business; they work half an hour and then go out and get a drink, and this goes on until finally they must give up, go home and go to bed. 

He is on the verge of insanity, irritable, fatigued, sweats much, is aggravated. from the air, sensitive to noise and light; broken down. 

He must have Nux, rest and no stimulants.

In those drinking too much tea, coffee and stimulants, they stay awake day and night until the end must come; there is tension in all the nerves; he feels as if he must fly, as if he could no longer hold together; his muscles and hands tremble; there is jerking of the limbs on going to sleep and in sleep.

Full of anxiety, despair, and hypochondriasis; "oversensitive to impressions; "all the senses are in this condition; cannot bear reading or conversation; irritable, and wishes to be alone."

Everybody that attempts to soothe only angers him. 

He dreads the business affairs of the day. 

Finally this state comes on: "he quarrels, reproaches, scolds, insults from jealousy, mingled with unchaste expressions; soon afterwards howls and weeps aloud."

Humor

Suits very particular, careful, zealous persons, inclined to get angry or excited, or of a spiteful, malicious disposition. 


Very easily bewildered; everything goes wrong. 


Irritable, morose, sullen; quarrelsome if disturbed. 


Cannot bear reading of conversation; irritable and wishes to be alone.

Intolerable anxiety for an hour, [7].

Three months ago mental shock, since then fears to be alone, and menses, formerly regular, have not appeared; in morning as if stupefied; starting in sleep, nocturnal sweats; pain in pit of stomach when touched or pressed; frequent risings in throat and feeling as if she would choke; roaring in ears; shooting headache from crown to poll, with rigor; inclination to sleep; fear of knives and the like, lest she should kill herself or others; attacks commence with palpitation, the fever rises to brain and she is a prey to anxiety; thoughts distracted; heat breaks out and yawning closes attack. 


Hypochondriasis: with studious men sitting too much at home, with abdominal complaints and costiveness (constipação); after all kinds of quack medicines, for dyspepsia; irritable temper; arising from liver or gastric troubles, especially in drunkards; < after eating, with sensitiveness. 


Hypochondriac mood after dinner, and still more after supper, [1].

Very hypochondriac, and affected by the slightest thing, after eating, [1]. 

Head and Teeth

Pregnancy

Mania puerperalis from excitement, sleeplessness and prostration; had menorrhagia, and for the subsequent weakness drank much whisky and strong coffee; cachectic appearance; large, dim, languid eyes; lies in bed half uncovered, sits up and then lies down again; constantly complaining, criticizing or explaining, at times words are well chosen, at others uses high-sounding phrases; as soon as she recognized physician she spoke of the imperfection of medical knowledge and declared it an error that one could not live without a heart, inasmuch as she felt very well without one, it having come away with the afterbirth to which it had grown fast, the nurse having separated the two before her eyes; complains of her husband, says he wishes to convince her she is sick, although she is able to dance and sing; makes grotesque motions and wild leaps, but soon sinks down breathless; nymphomania; often enraged; frequently sips at a bowl of warm sugar-water, declaring it will form her a new heart; bloating of abdomen; epigastric, hepatic and uterine regions sensitive to pressure; stool absent five to six days; very frequent and profuse discharge of pale, watery urine ; white mucous discharge from vagina.

Sad or frightful; of mutilations; confused; anxious; pursued by cats and dogs, etc.; about fatal accidents; of quarreling; about exerting the mind; amorous. 


Whimpering and moaning in sleep, waking from troubled, busy dreams, frightened, as if some one were in room. θ Mania a potu. θ Typhus.

Nightmare after a heavy supper or alcoholic beverages; during sleep blowing, snoring respiration; dreams full of bustle and hurry; springs up delirious, has frightful visions; awakens in fright from least noise.

Slept after taking, but not very soundly, for an hour and a half, his rest interrupted by dreams, some of which were of a delightful description, [58].
